The instructor commented that some of my grading seemed to harsh, because some students don’t have prior experience writing research papers. What’s funny is that I graded as if the students wrote an essay for an intro English course with a little bit of psychology tossed in. Half the students didn’t format their papers correctly (APA’s a pretty simple format), and most students hardly provided enough details for me to know what topics they addressed. After grading the second paper, I even implemented a policy to not deduct points unless a section reached a certain degree of my own confusion. I really don’t understand how I could’ve graded any easier.

TL;DR Apparently, I’m not supposed to treat undergrads like they’re competent individuals who know how to discuss an idea through writing.
